INFORMATION

Social Sciences University of Ankara has the mission of providing its students an interdisciplinary and research-based education. As the first and only Faculty of Foreign Languages in Turkey, our institution takes on this crucial task with its departments’ curricula including a large spectrum of elective foreign languages, literature, culture and linguistic studies. Knowing a country’s or a region’s language and literature plays a significant role in comprehending that country’s or region’s social, cultural, economic, and political systems, or its historical and current relations with other countries and regions. The Faculty of Foreign Languages provides its students the requisite background for language and literature studies in such a wide range.

As a concomitant of our university’s mission, the Faculty of Foreign Languages enables its students to acquire the necessary information, skills and competence to understand foreign languages and cultures. The principle focus of our Faculty is to prepare the students for a global world by means of teaching them various languages, literatures and cultures. Students admitted to a four-year Bachelor’s/undergraduate program at our Faculty will not only anatomise a specific country’s or region’s literature and culture, but also will be knowledgeable with the disciplines of translation and linguistics. Departmental elective courses (as of now, the courses of the Department of English Language and Literature) are particularly varied for students to specialise in such different disciplines as British Literature, Cultural Studies, Translation and Linguistics. For students desiring to continue their postgraduate studies, our Faculty will provide opportunities to gain expertise in many areas of the above-mentioned disciplines. Among the master and doctorate programs planned to be started in our Faculty are British Literature, Cultural Studies, Comparative Literature and Applied Linguistics.
